Thursday Thirteen #25

I was going to use this picture for yesterday's Wordless Wednesday - but it has such a great story behind it I couldn't leave it wordless!

This picture was taken in 2004 when I was in Nigeria living with my grandparents, who are missionaries there. My uncle, aunt and four cousins all live right next door. My grandparents live in the middle of no where. It takes an hour to drive to the post office and a small market place. It takes three hours to drive to drive to a semi-decent market place. This semi-decent market place is where the story takes place.

My cousin and I were at the market place and this Nigerian man in his early twenties approached us. It didn't take long to realize that in his eyes him and I equaled happily ever after. He actually said these things to me:

"Look! You are wearing flip flops and so am I! What a coincidence!"
"You are wearing green, and so am I! What a coincidence!"
"You are drinking Coke and I am too! What a coincidence!"
"You have dark hair and so do I! What a coincidence!"

All of these 'coincidences' were signs to him that him and I were meant to be together, and it was so obvious that he had a massive crush on me. Or, ok, maybe a strong passion to get to Canada, but I prefer to think he liked me for *me.*

All of these coincidences happened within a matter of minutes of cousin and me meeting him, and when he finally paused and asked me about myself my cousin piped up and told him I was a country music star from Canada and was in Nigeria for a vacation.

He asked for my name and when I told him Jessica Crowe (my maiden name) he says "Ah yes, I think I have heard of you! I am so pleased to meet you!" And then became all the more convinced we were meant to be as he owned a music store and I was supposedly a singer - how much clearer could it get??

He asked me to sing, but we told him I was under strict orders to rest my voice. He asked me to send him my cd, and I said I'd do the best I could.

I left the market that day thinking I would never see or hear from him again. I was so wrong.

The next trip to the market place I stayed at home, and just my cousin went. She came home bearing gifts for me from Mr. Coincidence. He'd sent a book on some country music singer, a belt buckle that said "Country Music" on it and his photo albums. I think there were four or five of them. (And he'd requested I send the albums back to him next time someone went to the market.)

That is when I got the idea to take the above picture of myself to send to him! I got all dressed up (because trust me, I don't normally dress this way!) and my cousin took some pictures for me. I got them printed and the next time my cousin went to the market I sent along an autographed picture of myself.

Conceited? Maybe. Coincidental? I think not.

Today is Thursday Thirteen, and mine is Thirteen Reasons Why Mr. Coincidence and I Would Never Have Worked Out.

  1. I lied to him. That is no way to start a relationship.
  2. If I did try to keep up the facade that I was a singer eventually I'd be caught - I can not sing.
  3. I don't think I could convince him that Canada liked really off tune and shaky voiced country singers!
  4. I am not sure if he would ever get over the shock that I'm not truly a singer.
  5. And even if he did, his initial attraction was driven by a desire to get to Canada, not based on the fact that he loved me.
  6. I couldn't pronounce his first name.
  7. I can't cook Nigerian food, and I am not too fond of the hot and spicy food they eat!
  8. His photo album was full of pictures of him with other women - I could never be with a man that had a history of dating tons of women.
  9. I really wasn't interested in him.
  10. In the slightest bit.
  11. Because I was already interested in Paul.
  12. As nice as this man was Paul was much, much nicer =)
  13. And to this day I know Paul was a much, much better pick. :)

A Baby Sling, like this one, available from
Babies-R-Us. 5. A book for mum - but not parenting books! Something light hearted that is easy to put down, maybe just a magazine.

It's not that I don't LOVE Thursday Thirteen ... in fact it is one of only TWO meme's that I actually participate in ... I think it is probably the very best meme in the blog world! But, lets face it... there are other meme's out there!! Here is a list of THIRTEEN meme's that I don't participate in, for no reason other than the simple fact that I would have NO life if I tried to stay on top of them all!

  1. RANDOMNESS - a weekly meme done on Sunday's that asks a random question that you are to answer!
  2. SUNDAY SPUR FOR SCRAPBOOKERS - a weekly meme, again done on Sunday, for scrapbookers. This one looks super cool - what a great way to get inspired for your own scrapbooking!!
  3. WORD BEADS - another Sunday meme - you are given five random words and you need to find a way to string them together!
  4. FUNNY MONDAY - A meme for Mondays. A theme is given and you must post something - a picture, joke, movie, story, etc. that matches the theme!
  5. MONDAY MUSIC MAMBO - A Monday meme that is music related. It changes each week what you need to do, but it is always related to music!
  6. IN OTHER WORDS - A Tuesday meme. You are given a quote and it is meant to make you think and inspire you to write something.
  7. BOOKING THROUGH THURSDAY - A meme for Thursday devoted to reading and books!
  8. FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY - A meme that takes place the last Friday of every month. Basically you create a guest account for your blog and allow anyone to post on your blog!! Sounds scary to me!!
  9. FRIDAY FILL IN - A fun meme for Fridays where you simply fill in the blank with your personal preferences!
  10. SEE IT 'N' WRITE IT - This is a monthly meme that gives you four pictures that are meant to inspire a short story or poem.
  11. 101 THINGS TO DO IN 1,001 DAYS - A one time meme that you can participate in. List 101 things you want to get done in the next 1,001 days.
  12. TWO THINGS - This is another one time meme, and it hasn't been updated in three years but it looks cool! You have to list two things that people would need to know in order to do your job.
  13. VISITED COUNTRIES - Another one time meme. You check off the countries that you have been to, then copy the code and put in on your blog!

Thirteen Facts about TP
  1. In 1935, Northern Tissue advertised "splinter-free" toilet paper. Yep, you read that right; early paper production techniques sometimes left splinters embedded in the paper. And you thought you had it tough!
  2. America experienced its first toilet paper shortage in 1973.
  3. Corncobs and pages torn from newspapers and magazines were commonly used in the early American West. The Sears catalogue was well-known in this context, and even produced such humorous spin offs as the "Rears and Sorebutt" catalogue. The Farmer's Almanac had a hole in it so it could be hung on a hook and the pages torn off easily.
  4. The roll did not easily fit into the consumer market at first. At the time, society did not speak of the subject frequently. It was quite 'unmentionable" to talk about this product in the conservative, Victorian era.
  5. Before TP was invented the frayed end of an old anchor cable was used by sailing crews from Spain and Portugal
  6. And lace was used by French Royalty
  7. And if you were lucky enough to be raised on the Hawaiian islands, you may have used good old coconut shells.
  8. The average tear is 5.90 sheets of TP.
  9. Of a survey that polled 106 people 42% fold, 33% crumple, 8% do both fold and crumple, 6% wrap it around their hands.
  10. The U.S. toilet paper market is worth about $2.4 billion a year,
  11. The average American uses more than 20,805 sheets a year
  12. 25% of the population prefer their TP to go 'under' on the dispenser
  13. Men fold the TP 58% to women's 32% and women crumple 52% to men's 38%. (The others wrap it around their hand.)

Everyone keeps telling me
'Chores will be there forever, your baby won't be. Enjoy him!'
And I have taken them up on that advice. In fact I love hearing that from people because it makes me feel better about what I haven't done at the end of a day!!

Thirteen tasks that should get done:

1. Wash the kitchen floor
2. Vacuum all the carpeting
3. Wash the windows
4. Organize our pots and pans

5. Sort through my clothes - what's too big or too small
6. Sweep the bathroom floor

7. Organize the storage closet
8. Clean off our porch
9. Organize our dvd collection
10. Put away all our clean laundry
11. Organize Judah's clothes

Thirteen Baby Related Things I Wouldn't Want to Live Without

1. Disposable Diapers! I can *not* imagine having to dispose of the contents of these diapers with the intention of keeping the diaper. *Ick*

2. Swaddling Blankets - he lives in those things! More often than not he doesn't wear clothes, just a diaper and the swaddling blanket.

3. Milk Intake Scales (at least until he is feeding ok!!)

4. An electric pump (again! at least until he is feeding ok!)

5. His Sling. I have put him in it the few times we've been out and people leave us alone! It's a lot more private - and therefore germ free - than just carrying him or carrying him in his car seat.

6. His daddy. Paul is a super diaper changer, baby burper and mother pamperer.

7. Burp clothes to catch the spit up!

8. Google and Baby forums for answering my immediate questions and concerns.

9. His car seat, since it keeps him safe. But man, I would love to do it African style and just hold him while we drive =)

10. A camera. While not exactly a baby thing, anyone with a baby does not want to be without a camera!!

11. Netflix.com - again, not a 'baby thing' - but during the long nursings trying to get him to eat having a constant flow of new movies to watch is GREAT!

12. A notebook and pen to keep track of everything that's going on so I can enter it in his baby scrapbook when I have time. (Will I ever have time?!)

13. Knowing the Designer and Creator of this little baby and knowing He is in control of all that has happened and all that will happen.

Thirteen things I have learnt

1. Love at first sight does exist

2. You can happily survive on much less sleep than previously thought possible

3. It is easier to go out and buy more underwear than it is to do a load of laundry.

4. I like nurses more than doctors

5. The NICU is loud

6. Sneezing hurts

7. It's nearly impossible to force yourself to wake up to pump in the middle of the night.

8. Paul does know how to change a newborns diaper (this info will come in handy!)

9. I'd rather smell slightly bad then attempt to put deoderant on (because of swollen lymph nodes) -ouch

10. Now that he is here people no longer say "oh. interesting..." when we tell them our sons name is Judah.

11. It is really exciting and almost brag worthy to see the amount of milk I pump increase each day. (Ok, confession - I drag Paul to the freezer when he gets home so he can see it.)

12. I will probably end up with thousands of pictures of Judah in his first year alone. We're nearly at 200 pictures right now, and he is just five days old.

13. Giving birth is an undescribable experience - I am in awe of God's design for human life.

Thursday Thirteen #7

In honor of the upcoming road trip, today’s thirteen is THIRTEEN FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT ROADTRIPS:

1. Anticipating the destination. Especially this trip – where I will be seeing PAUL again!!
2. The bathrooms. Seriously, there are some pretty cool bathrooms at different fast food joints, gas stations and truck stops. Some are pretty nasty, but that’s the price you pay for finding the cool ones. I have seen a velvet wallpapered bathroom, and being so impressed with the woman’s my friend and I snuck into the mans and their urinal was a stone waterfall!! Too cool!
3. The scenery. It never gets boring – and the longer the trip the more variety of scenery you see.
4. Playing games. Who hasn’t played the license plate game on a long road trip? Or counted how many cows you could see in a certain amount of time? Or thrown bouncy balls out the window as you drive down a hill … a car drives faster than bouncy balls can bounce. (Just in case you haven’t tried this activity yourself)
5. Food. It all tastes better when you’re in the car. And different states have different foods. Like the boiled peanuts we found in North Carolina. They tasted gross, but that was my fault for picking a guy who hadn’t made them right.
6. Audio books. When you’re sitting in the car it’s very easy to listen to someone else reading a book. I have made it through many of Mary Higgins Clark's books - and Paul actually likes them too =)
7. Discovering new places. Paul and I found ‘America’s largest McDonalds’ on one of our trips. =) We didn’t bother to stop and eat there though. Just took a picture of it!
8. Listening to music. What’s a road trip without music? Whether you’re the one belting it out and bouncing along, or the one complaining that it’s too loud and you don’t like it… a road trip isn’t complete without music.
9. Gas pumps. If you want to be thoroughly confused try filling up with gas at different gas stations. There seriously must be about half a dozen different pumps all with different operating instructions. After a long time in the car it makes for some comic relief.
10. Road Signs and billboards. There are some very humorous signs if you take the time to read them. There are two signs on I-90 that crack me up. Sign one reads “Do not pick up hitchhikers.” Sign two, about five miles down the road, reads “State penitentiary, next exit.”
11. No strict time schedule. Road trips are much more enjoyable when you have the freedom and flexibility to stop when you want to or when you see something that catches your eye … or when you want to take a ‘scenic’ route, that although very beautiful, adds an extra hour or two to your trip… you can do it! All because you’re not on a tight schedule. We have seen gorgeous places in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Arizona that we wouldn’t have seen had we stuck to a schedule and map.
12. Accents. Or sayings only said in certain areas. Some people are just so funny, and they don’t even know it!
13. Familiar faces. It is amusing to me to see the same people over and over again when you’re driving. Whether you keep passing each other on the highway, or you see each other when you stop at rest stops, it gives me the warm fuzzies to feel like I know someone along the way. =) The record for running into strangers on a road trip was from Florida to Ontario and we saw the same family at different rest stops four times! Needless to say, I was highly amused.
