Buying Bananas For Less

Sorry if kids with messy hands and faces gross you out.
They gross me out.

I'm not really sure why I am even posting this picture for the entire world to see when it makes me shiver with disgust to look at the messiness all over him.

I took this picture the other night when he ate three bananas and six hard boiled eggs in a row. And he was still asking for more. He's his fathers son!

He's developed a true addiction to bananas. I buy 12lbs every 4-5 days, and they generally only last 3-4 days. And that one day that we're without bananas is horrible. It's like he's going through banana withdrawal. He's so weird. Definitely his fathers son. :)

Our grocery store sells "red band" bananas for .30 cents less per lb. than regular bananas. The red band bananas are suppose to be all of the bananas that are going bad, you know, the ones that in one day would make perfect banana bread?
But the produce guy always puts all of single bananas (that have fallen off other bunches) into the red bands too, so while Judah isn't picky about how ripe or (over ripe!) his bananas are, it is nice to get "just right bananas" for .30 cents less per lb.

I have seen a few other stores doing the "red band" thing on their bananas, but I don't know if they do it with all their single bananas, or just with the overly ripe ones.
The overly ripe ones do make for great banana bread. I have made a lot of that lately too. I make them into muffins and they freeze so nicely. It makes an easy breakfast or a quick snack! Just a matter of seconds in the microwave to thaw out!

30 cents less a pound= .19 in NY. How much does it make bananas in Georgia? Oh yeah, and 3 bananas and 6 boiled eggs... That would give me a tummy ache.

Call me gross, but I like red-band bananas the way they are...I think they're sweeter when they're almost overripe.
I've also found a nice, regional use for them: Put a cut-up overripe banana, some milk and sugar into the blender and blend, then blend in some of the blackberries that you picked (for free!) last summer. It thickens up like a milkshake. Quite tasty. (It works without the bananas, too.)

One more suggestion for red-band bananas, courtesy of the Wise Bread (wisebread.com) personal finance blog: Breakfast cookies.
3 mashed bananas (ripe), 1/3 cup apple sauce, 2 cups uncooked quick-cooking oats, 1/4 cup skim milk, 1/2 cup raisins (or any other dried fruit you want to add), 1 tsp vanilla, 1 tsp cinnamon and 1 tbsp Splenda, sugar or other sweetener.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients in a bowl really well. Let this mixture stand for at least 5 minutes to let the oats become good and hydrated. Heap the dough by teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes and let cool.
Variations: If you add some chopped nuts, you have a grab and go breakfast that includes protein as well as fruits and grains. Dried cranberries are also a great addition if you don't care for raisins, which some people don't. Cardamom fans may want to substitute that spice for the cinnamon.
"It's basically oatmeal with add-ins for breakfast that you can eat from your hand," according to the author.
More importantly, to my way of thinking, is that it's a recipe that little kids can "help" with. Slightly older kids could do it on their own if mom/dad opens up the applesauce, gets down the oatmeal box, etc. And we all know that kids are a lot more likely to try a new food if they had a hand in the process. (Besides, it's an excuse to squish up bananas. Get out those potato mashers!)
