Green Smoothie - Recipe #1

Green Smoothies turned Purple.

This is a great Green Smoothie recipe to start with as the blueberries color it a pretty purple color, which is a bit more normal of a color for a smoothie, and the taste is rather sweet given the yogurt, blueberries and banana. This is what we call a Dessert Green Smoothie and we don't typically eat this, but I thought it would be a good one to start with!

What you need:

about 8oz of fresh spinach
 1 6oz cup blueberry yogurt
1 10oz bag frozen blueberries
1 banana
1 cup of water
1/2 cup milk
1+ cup of ice

Fill the blender with greens first - we always have just to make sure we fit them all in, but several of you commented or emailed me to let me know that it's best to put the frozen stuff in last for the sake of the motor, so we'll be more intentional about that from now on! Thanks for that tip.

Add all other ingredients and blend until everything is a smooth liquid.

We taste test as we blend - if it is too thick, add more liquid. If it's too watery or not sweet enough add a banana. You could also add a bit of honey if it's not sweet enough for your tastes.

Sounds yummy except that I cannot STAND bananas in smoothies. I've discovered recently that I needed to add more liquid to mine (generally juice if we have it or liquid whey from straining our yogurt if we don't). I also never add ice- the frozen fruit keeps it more than cold/icy enough. Mine have the consistency of a slurpee if I add enough liquid. My main issue is that I tend to fill the blender right to the top and end up with more than will fit in my bottle.

That looks gross. However, you did inspire me to try it. So I started small. I had Nadia count out 10 baby spinach leaves, I added a whole celery stalk, a couple of baby carrots and then a ton of fruit. It was great! She didn't like it, though, but she's a picky eater. So I think I will continue to add more veggies to my smoothies, now that summer is here, I'll be eating them more often anyway. Thanks!
